Marks & Spencer admits that Ocado will deliver, but slowly

The chairman of Marks & Spencer has admitted there will be “very limited” scope for its customers to be able to shop with Ocado when its joint venture launches in September because of capacity constraints.

The comments come despite Marks & Spencer anticipating that its highly anticipated £750 million partnership with the online grocer will double its food sales.

Archie Norman, 66, told investors at the retailer’s virtual annual meeting that Ocado was “at capacity” because of the huge increase in customers switching to online shopping since the start of the pandemic.

“Ocado during the crisis has been in huge demand, because existing Ocado customers have been trying to increase their orders and additional people have been trying to get on to the delivery circuit,”
