Google drones bringing world's first deliveries of coffee and groceries to customers in Queensland

From groceries and coffee to hardware, a world-first drone delivery service has officially launched in Logan, south of Brisbane.

Like something out of a sci-fi movie, Google-owned company Wing has taken off in Marsden and Crestmead after coronavirus sparked a surge in demand for the new contactless service.

Crestmead grocer Baz Rizk is trialling the world-first service delivering bread and even hot chickens to his customers.

"Within five to 10 minutes it can be in their home," he told 9News.

Slacks Creek business Extraction Artisan Coffee has also teamed up with the drone service.

Owner Alex Milosevic has set-up a coffee machine at the drone warehouse and can make coffees to order, that can be delivered within several minutes to a customer's home.

"The drones are so stable when they fly so there's no spillage," he said.

Customers can sign-up on the Wing.com website and download the app to order.

There is a waiting list, however, but Wing has told 9News it's planning to expand to more suburbs by the end of the year.

At the moment there's only two suburbs in the entire city that get this service, which is Crestmead and Marsden, and the community has been really calling for more," Logan City Council Deputy Mayor Jon Raven said.

American company Wing landed in Logan last year and after an approval process with council and CASA.

The contactless COVID-safe service is receiving thousands of orders a month.

"I know a few suburbs are dying for it, I have put my hat in the ring for Waterford West but I don't know if I have any more influence than anyone else," Cr Raven said.

"We've got so many customers now saying, when's it coming, when's it coming? Look I'm chomping at the bit," Mr Milosevic said.

The drones can travel more than 100 kilometres an hour, carrying items of up to 1.5kg including anything from pharmaceuticals to food and hardware.

The company's also looking to team-up with Fed-Ex to deliver mail.
