H-E-B opens automated e-commerce fulfillment center in Leander, Texas

To meet booming demand in its online grocery business, H-E-B has opened a new e-commerce fulfillment center in Leander, Texas

The 50,000-square-foot fulfillment center, located at 651 North U.S. Highway in Leander, will service H-E-B Curbside and Home Delivery orders across the Austin suburb and surrounding cities in the Central Texas region, H-E-B said yesterday.

This is H-E-B’s fifth e-commerce fulfillment center to be built since 2018, and the company has plans to open additional facilities by the end of next year, including one in Plano that will service the Dallas-Fort Worth market.

At H-E-B, we’re always looking for ways to offer Texans a better shopping experience and more options to choose how they shop, pay for, and receive their products. Across our business we are adopting innovative technologies that give our partners the tools they need to provide top-quality service to our customers whether they shop online or in our stores.

Expected to employ more than 150 staff, the Leander facility marks the fifth e-commerce fulfillment center that H-E-B has opened since 2018. The Texas grocer, based in San Antonio, said that by the end of next year it aims to open additional facilities across the state, including in Plano to help support the its expansion into the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

H-E-B’s e-commerce fulfillment centers stock goods found in stores to fill delivery and curbside pickup orders. The new centers have more capacity, greater efficiency and better product availability, resulting in less aisle congestion for in-store shoppers, the retailer noted. H-E-B Curbside and Home Delivery currently are available at more than 260 stores in Texas.

“At H-E-B, we’re always looking for ways to offer Texans a better shopping experience and more options to choose how they shop, pay for and receive their products,” Kedar Patel, vice president of e-commerce at H-E-B. “Across our business, we are adopting innovative technologies that give our partners the tools they need to provide top-quality service to our customers whether they shop online or in our stores.”

H-E-B added that the opening of the Leander facility builds on the chain’s longstanding presence in a rapidly growing region of Texas. Late last year, H-E-B opened its second supermarket in Leander, a 103,000-square-foot store at 19348 Ronald W. Reagan Blvd. in the new Bar W Marketplace shopping center. In May, the grocer also opened an H-E-B Wellness Primary Care clinic inside the new store, and the facility is one of two clinics now open in Central Texas, with the other located in Austin.

The grocery chain is also adding frozen capabilities to its distribution facilities in Temple, Texas. The project will grow H-E-B's current facility footprint by 325,000 square feet and will aid in distribution to the company’s soon-to-open stores in the DFW Metroplex.

Overall, H-E-B operates more than 420 stores, including about 360 locations in Texas and 60 in Mexico, and generates annual sales of approximately $36 billion.
