Operationally, the Mantova center integrates cutting-edge automated intralogistics equipment. Boasting over 20 kilometers of conveyor belts and 675 automatic shuttles, the warehouse's parcel processing capacity can soar to an impressive 375,000 per day. Moreover, sustainability lies at the core of this project, with the facility achieving carbon neutrality through innovative initiatives. A photovoltaic system installed on the roof generates renewable energy equivalent to the consumption of 3,000 homes, earning the facility's prestigious LEED GOLD certification.
Introducing the world’s first autonomous unloading and loading solution
Scheduled to launch soon in 2024, the fulfillment center is anticipated to create approximately 700 new jobs and is poised to process an astounding 18,000 packages per hour. It represents a long-term strategic partnership between the 3PL provider and Adidas, aimed at establishing the largest CO2-neutral fulfillment center in the provider's global history.
Gianfranco Sgro, a member of the 3PL provider's International AG's Management Board overseeing Contract Logistics, reflects on the project's multifaceted challenges and the remarkable achievements despite being developed predominantly during lockdown. The facility's reliance on remote work and digital collaboration underscores its resilience and adaptability.
With a commitment to sustainability, the fulfillment center will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources. The 3PL provider prioritizes the use of sustainable packaging materials and processes to minimize resource consumption and CO2 emissions while maintaining operational excellence. Additionally, the campus will offer environmentally friendly transport options for its approximately 700 employees, further aligning with the city of Mantova's vision for sustainable development and economic growth.
Mayor Mattia Palazzi emphasizes Mantova's strategic significance in the logistic landscape, positioning the city as a pivotal hub within an intermodal corridor linking Northern Europe to the Mediterranean. The city's enthusiastic support underscores the collective recognition of the project's profound impact on the community and the nation's innovation landscape.
“The project’s combination of technology, service levels, sustainability and of course its exceptional scale has made it one of the most challenging ever faced by our team. The majority of it was also developed during lockdown, proving the capabilities of remote work and digital collaboration,” says Gianfranco Sgro, member of the Management Board of Kuehne+Nagel International AG, responsible for Contract Logistics.
“The new logistic hub confirms Mantova’s strategic role in the logistic landscape. Only two kilometres from A22 highway and close to the international river port of Valdarno in the middle of an intermodal corridor from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean. We supported this extraordinary project at full speed and determination due to the strategic relevance on our community and the extraordinary innovation for our country”, comments Mattia Palazzi, Mayor of Mantova.
