Amazon offering 'Direct-Store-Delivery' from retailers including PacSun and Diesel

Amazon is continuing to expand its last mile services beyond its own retail ecosystem with the addition of same-day delivery service from a number of leading retailers’ stores, including PacSun, GNC, SuperDry and Diesel. Sur La Table and 100% Pure also will join this roster in the next few months.

Available to retailers that also sell on the Amazon Marketplace, the expanded seller offering will see Amazon associates pick up and deliver online orders from retailers’ stores to Prime members who select the option at checkout. Some stores now also offer Prime members the option to buy items on Amazon and then go them up at the retailers’ stores as well.

“The expansion of Amazon’s same-day delivery to include beloved brands delivered directly from nearby retail locations is just another way we are offering customers even greater selection, at faster speeds,” said Sarah Mathew, Director of Amazon Delivery Experience in a statement. “We are excited to see this new model come to life and look forward to adding more brands, stores and locations to the program.”

Same-day delivery from participating retailers is now available in select zip codes across more than 10 cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Ariz., Seattle and Washington D.C. Amazon said it plans to expand to additional retailers and cities around the country in the months ahead.

The service is free for U.S. Prime members who spend $25 or more on qualifying items and costs $2.99 for members who spend below $25. Prime members in eligible zip codes simply visit the Amazon app or Amazon.com, browse the curated selection from retail stores in their area and select same-day delivery. Amazon then sends the order to the store and a retail store associate fulfills it. Then an Amazon delivery partner picks up the order from the retail location and delivers it to customers that same day. It’s like DoorDash for retail, with the Amazon logo on top.

“We see high potential in our expanded seller partnership with Amazon, which includes delivery directly from select PacSun retail locations,” said Mimi Ruiz, VP of Ecommerce at PacSun in a statement. “This is one more way for us to offer our customers the styles they want and love, when they want them.”

The new offering showcases the ways that the ecommerce behemoth is increasingly moving beyond sales and into retail services. It all began with the launch of the company’s third-party marketplace more than 20 years ago and all the services that were subsequently built up around it, such as Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) and Amazon Advertising. Now, Amazon is increasingly making its logistics services available outside of its own ecosystem. For example:

  • In late 2021, Amazon announced new local selling capabilities that allow its third-party sellers to offer same-day store pickup and fast delivery for customers in their area. The service is currently being used by Sears, Best Buy and Mattress Warehouse;

  • In April 2022, Amazon began to allow FBA merchants to offer Prime delivery through their own websites. Retailers that utilize FBA can now offer Prime members the services they’re used to, such as Amazon Pay, two-day shipping and free returns from their owned and operated sites.
